People clamouring to defend bad spelling/grammar pisses me off more than people accidentally making bad spelling/grammar mistakes because they don't know any better. Indeed, I know I make spelling and grammar mistakes all the time, but I don't defend them.

"The English language evolves," is still not an excuse. Can't is not, and will never be a word. It is two words. Even abbreviated it is still two words. And "cant" can not, in any way, shape, or form, stand in for "can not" without that apostrophe.

RELATED RANT: FIREFOX SPELL CHECK IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT.

... Okay, I think I'm done.

Ah, yes. I once knew people who thought it was one word, much like don't and won't and couldn't. (Firefox still doesn't recognize couldn't and wouldn't as a word, which I find funny because I'm pretty sure their spellcheck is American)

One time in seventh grade my English teacher revealed to the class that "gonna" was not a word, and all my classmates were shocked. I beat my head against the desk a few times in protest.

OH GOD

Okay guilty admission time: I use gonna all the time over the internet and via text messaging. Emiri uses it in her speech all the time, too. BUT I do it with the knowledge that it is terrible slang and I made a conscious decision to have Emiri use it as a way to indicate a verbal speech pattern. I would never, EVER use it in proper writing, even if that proper writing was just a sentence of prose describing Emiri's actions if I were in a prose-RP. (WHICH, THANK GOD, I AM NOT. BECAUSE I AM TERRIBLE AT PROSE.) You can't say the same for "alright" though, because it sounds the same as "all right" :\.
