People clamouring to defend bad spelling/grammar pisses me off more than people accidentally making bad spelling/grammar mistakes because they don't know any better. Indeed, I know I make spelling and grammar mistakes all the time, but I don't defend them.

"The English language evolves," is still not an excuse. Can't is not, and will never be a word. It is two words. Even abbreviated it is still two words. And "cant" can not, in any way, shape, or form, stand in for "can not" without that apostrophe.

RELATED RANT: FIREFOX SPELL CHECK IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT.

... Okay, I think I'm done.

I realize my ignorance as both an American and an American appreciator of the English language is showing, but-- why is "can't" not a word? Because it's a contraction? A contraction is used to shorten and connect two words, but why does that negate the validity of the words it is shortening?

[identity profile] emiri [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think I worded myself badly. It not that it's not valid, it's that it's not one word. It's two words.

[identity profile] christi_morelei [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes. I once knew people who thought it was one word, much like don't and won't and couldn't. (Firefox still doesn't recognize couldn't and wouldn't as a word, which I find funny because I'm pretty sure their spellcheck is American)

One time in seventh grade my English teacher revealed to the class that "gonna" was not a word, and all my classmates were shocked. I beat my head against the desk a few times in protest.

[identity profile] emiri [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
OH GOD

Okay guilty admission time: I use gonna all the time over the internet and via text messaging. Emiri uses it in her speech all the time, too. BUT I do it with the knowledge that it is terrible slang and I made a conscious decision to have Emiri use it as a way to indicate a verbal speech pattern. I would never, EVER use it in proper writing, even if that proper writing was just a sentence of prose describing Emiri's actions if I were in a prose-RP. (WHICH, THANK GOD, I AM NOT. BECAUSE I AM TERRIBLE AT PROSE.) You can't say the same for "alright" though, because it sounds the same as "all right" :\.

[identity profile] sapphire [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
...But "alright" is in the dictionary. Don't confuse an ESL here D:

Although I understand the necessity to know how to spell on your own, and not rely on spell checks.

It's possible then that it's an Americanism...? I can accept that. Like color and apologize. I DON'T AGREE WITH THEM but I can recognise them because they have nothing to do with me. But growing up it was drilled into my head, repeatedly, by several different teachers that "alright" was not in any way ever an acceptable spelling of "all right".

ps STANDARD DISCLAIMER I did not make the secret xD.

[identity profile] sapphire [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
It stuck in my mind because there was a debate about it ten years ago until it was officially accepted as a valid word. I don't feel very strongly about the whole issue, though.

I understand the drilling thing, though. We're taught languages grammar and spelling based that I was appalled at how some native speakers are very ignorant of basic rules.

I DID, HOWEVER, EXPERIENCE THIS. I prefer the way "all right" looks, personally.

[identity profile] mindofstars [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
I too was told that we do not use the word "alright"! I wonder if it's an Australianism. I mean, we are pretty contrary bastards.

...dude I should ... make icons and stuff for this account.

[identity profile] lockon [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
IT'S NOT ONLY AN AUSSIE THING. Some English teachers just hate it.

[identity profile] lockon [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
Alright is correct. It's adjusted over time to be appropriate in multiple nations (as I've seen it used by both Americans and otherwise).

[identity profile] xoloitzcuintle [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Alright is a valid word. IT WAS ORIGINALLY ALL RIGHT BUT IT EVOLVED.

AND IDK BUT "CAN'T" COUNTS AS ONLY ONE WORD WHEN MY STUDENTS DO WRITING TASKS.

[identity profile] polyserena [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
My friend just linked this

... I dunno, as a linguistics student there is a part of me that goes "language should be descriptive and hundreds of years ago they were ranting about the use of the word "talent" as anything other than a type of money and things do change" and then I see someone use "prejudice" as an adjective or "could care less" and that voice is drowned out by RAGE

*bows down before* ILU D:

[identity profile] comicsan [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
'Cant' is a word of its own, which may be the reason Firefox Spell Check doesn't find it incorrect!

Also: iawtp

[identity profile] emiri [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I am aware that cant is a word of it's own, but it's not in any way related to "can't". Er. This is all meandering away from the point, though |D.

...this reminds me of a secret I read recently...

[identity profile] telcontar [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
I was in there, on my Raikou account. Complaining about 'then' and 'than'. It was delightful.

[identity profile] emiri [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
AHHH NOOOOOOOO NOT THOSE.

[identity profile] telcontar [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
YOU SHOULD LEARN TO ACCEPT OTHER PEOPLE'S GRAMMATICAL FAUX PAS. IT IS BETTER THAN BEING ANGRY ALL THE TIME.

OR SHOULD I SAY

BETTER THEN BEING ANGRY ALL THE TIME.

[identity profile] emiri [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
WHY DO YOU HATE ME

[identity profile] telcontar [inksome.com] 2009-08-17 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Lies, I love you.

[identity profile] socute [inksome.com] 2009-08-27 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
.................anyone who thinks "can't" is a word should never talk to me because I might have to murder them.

ENCLITIC PEOPLE, ENCLITIC. Firefox doesn't even think "enclitic" is a word but I assure it is a valid linguistic term.
